Ah inflation...

And in a related matter, when I seen those 5, 10, and 15 cent prices, I’d like to remind people that when we got rid of the half-cent coin, it was worth about 13 cents in 2018 doll ars. We shouldn’t just be worried about getting rid of the penny, we should be getting rid of all coins below the quarter.

36 Ford and maybe a 36 Dodge or DeSoto at front, looks like a 29 Cadillac parked on the street.  The roadster on the rental car lot is more difficult, but not a Big 3 car.

The location today:

Just get rid of all of the coins altogether. A single dollar is essentially worhless these days, so anything less than is a waste of time and resources. Sure, we'll end up paying a fraction of a dollar more for everything, but at this point what's the difference? Everything is overpriced anyway.

And gas stations need to get rid of the tenth o f a cent thing. They're not fooling anyone with that 9/10th of a cent bullshit.

So I can spend an extra 24 cents every time my total is $1.01?

How does that work in practice? Do cash registers just start rounding to the nearest quarter for everything? If the total is $1.12 does it round to a dollar even, and then up to $1.25 if $1.13 or more?

One of my friends is currently trying to decide what sports car he can rent for our fall backroadtrip in Arkansas. He can get a Z06, but it’s limited to 75 miles per day with a .75 per mile penalty after that!

75 miles a day? That’s a pittance.

Yeah, that’s “show up at your high school reunion and drive it right back here” mileage.

Most proposals for getting rid of the penny want to round to the nearest nickel, though only for cash transactions. Seems like it would be fine to do the same if you go up to higher denominations. So the most you’d be overcharged by would be 12 cents per cash transaction. Consumer groups worry that businesses would try to game the system to have things round up more often, which I’m sure is true, but it’s hard to do that so that you benefit all the time (and if you did that you wouldn’t be able to do things like have $0.99 pricing, since that only rounds up a cent). Regardless, even for the very poor, it would take a long time for $0.12 overcharges to add up to much, and then you have to consider that that would be the extreme worst case.

I wouldn’t be opposed, but considering consumer groups don’t like the potential for $0.02 per cash transaction overages if we get rid of the penny, going all the way to dollar might be a bit much at this point.

The very poor are the most likely to be be dealing in cash, and the most likely not to be able to afford paying more for anything, however small $0 .12 might seem...

It’s true that the poor are the most vulnerable, but you really have to be making a lot of cash purchases, especially since while $ 0.12 is the worst case, I’d imagine even with all the pricing games stores might go through they’d have a hard time getting the average round up to more than 3 or 4 cents per transaction.

In any event if it’s a huge concern, raise the minimum wage by 10 cents per hour and you’d dwarf any losses due to rounding  (I’d rather have some sort of universal basic income than a minimum wage, but that’s neither here nor there).

Universal basic income is a really interesting concept to me. Seems like, with more and more automation and productivity increases in modern societies, it will be something that countries will almost have to start doing before long. That said, U.S. unemployment is less than 4% right now. It’s underemployment that’s the current issue...
